In the Win16 era, there was different Development environment:
-Turbo c
-QBasic
-QuickC for Windows 1.0
In the Win32 world,
Visual Basic was shipped into version 4.0 and 5.0,
Visual C++ was shipped into version 2.x, 4.0 and 4.2
and Visual Studio brand names was born to make some coherence and bring one IDE for all the language MS provides.
So Visual Studio 97 was the first edition and then Visual Studio 6.0 shipped VB6 anbd VC 6.0 and the J++ extensions.
Now, Visual Studio .NET (2002), and Visual Studio .NET 2003 was the first .NET edition of the IDE.
And now, MS developers are using Visual Studio 2005, either Express editions of Professional one.
Visual Studio is the evolution of a 20 years battle for Microsoft to bring a world class product to every MS developers.
