How to: Search for a Text String in Multiple Files

Visual Studio 2005

Visual SourceSafe uses the Find in Files command on the Tools menu to support a text search in multiple files. You can use this command to search for a string that is up to 63 characters in length.

To search for a text string:

  1. In Visual SourceSafe Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Find in Files.

  2. In the Find dialog box, enter the text string in the Find what box.

  3. If you want to use the question mark and asterisk as wildcard characters, select the Use Regular Expressions check box. Clear the box if you are using these as ordinary text characters.

  4. If you want your search to be case-sensitive, select the Match Case check box.

  5. If searching a project, a Recursive check box is present. You can select this to make the search recursive.

  6. If searching a file, select the Match whole word only check box if you want to find only whole words that match the text string.

  7. Select the Set bookmarks on all check box to set bookmarks for all matching strings.

  8. Click OK.
