SqlDataReader.GetDataTypeName Method

Gets the name of the source data type.

Parameters

i

The zero-based column ordinal.

Return Value

The name of the back-end data type.

Since data type numeric is a synonym in SQL Server for decimal, GetDataTypeName will return "decimal" for a column defined as either decimal or numeric.
