Team Foundation Server Upgrade Types

You can change your edition of Team Foundation Server by upgrading from one edition to another. For example, you can upgrade from Team Foundation Server Trial Edition to a full edition of Team Foundation Server. Before purchasing the edition of Team Foundation Server to which you want to upgrade, you should make sure that you are selecting the appropriate edition for your business needs, and that the upgrade path is supported.

Team Foundation Server Upgrades

There are several editions of Team Foundation Server available:

  • Team Foundation Server Trial Edition   This edition of Team Foundation Server is available as a free download from the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=64135). This edition has all the functionality of the full edition of Team Foundation Server, but will expire after 180 days.

  • Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition   This edition of Team Foundation Server is limited to five users, but otherwise has all the functionality of the full edition of Team Foundation Server.

  • Team Foundation Server   The full edition of Team Foundation Server has had several public pre-release trials available. This includes Team Foundation Server Beta 3, Team Foundation Server Beta 3 Refresh, and Team Foundation Server Release Candidate (RC). Because upgrading from a pre-release version involves separate software, the steps for upgrading from pre-release versions of Team Foundation Server to released editions of Team Foundation Server are not included in this documentation. To upgrade from the Team Foundation Server Beta 3 or Team Foundation Server Release Candidate (RC) editions, you must download the upgrade utilities and follow the included instructions from the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=60341). Upgrading from any other pre-release versions of Team Foundation Server is not supported.

Supported Upgrade Paths

The following upgrade paths are supported:

  • Upgrading from Team Foundation Server Trial Edition to Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition.

  • Upgrading from Team Foundation Server Trial Edition to Team Foundation Server.

  • Upgrading from Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition to Team Foundation Server.

Additionally, upgrading from Team Foundation Server Beta 3 Refresh to Team Foundation Server or Team Foundation Server Release Candidate (RC) to Team Foundation Server is supported by using the upgrade utilities and the included instructions from the Microsoft Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=60341).

Upgrading SQL Server Evaluation Edition When Upgrading From Team Foundation Server Trial Edition

In addition to upgrading your edition of Team Foundation Server, you might have to upgrade your edition of SQL Server. If you installed Team Foundation Server Trial Edition, you must upgrade your SQL Server software from SQL Server Evaluation Edition to either SQL Server Standard Edition or SQL Server Enterprise Edition as part of the upgrade process. Remember to do this before the 180-day trial period expires.

Product Key Considerations

During the upgrade of Team Foundation Server, you will have to provide a product key. If you acquired Team Foundation Server through a volume licensing program, you will not have an individual product key to provide during the upgrade process. You must contact Visual Studio Developer Professional Support in order to obtain a product key for the upgrade. For more information about licensing and obtaining product licenses, see the Team System Licensing White Paper (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=55164).
