Hardware Requirements and Performance Considerations

The guidelines presented here are appropriate for almost all deployments. They have been tested and validated specifically for environments that contain fewer than 500 users on a single Team Foundation Server. The server running Team Foundation Server should have a reliable network connection with a minimum bandwidth of 1 Mbps and a latency maximum of 350ms.

If your environment does not meet these criteria, then you should carefully consider the implications before deploying Team Foundation Server. Considerations should include larger hardware than recommended here, improving your network reliability and bandwidth, and the use of multiple servers running Team Foundation Server.

Several assumptions and considerations were made in determining the hardware requirements.

  • New servers purchased in 2004 should be usable for Team Foundation Server in 2005.

  • Users must upgrade servers purchased prior to 2004.

  • At least one physical computer will be dedicated to Team Foundation Server operations.

  • 8-way servers do not meet the "reasonable cost" target for teams of 500 or less.
