Publishing with mismatched application settings

Several message box prompts can be generated when you publish an application with mismatched settings. If you choose Yes/Overwrite in the message box, it means that any existing end users who have already installed the application from this location will not get updated; their automatic update link will be broken, and they will have to uninstall and reinstall to get updates working again.

The following list shows each prompt and then describes the circumstances under which that message is shown.

Published version 2.0.0.0 will be replaced by an older version (1.0.0.0).

Shown when you try to update a new application with an old version of the application.

Published version 1.0.0.0 already exists on the server. Do you want to overwrite it?

Shown when you try to update the server with the same version of the application.

The existing published deployment does not appear to be a valid deployment manifest. Are you sure you want to overwrite this file on the server?

Shown when the deployment manifest on the server is invalid.

The application culture does not match the existing application on the server. Do you want to overwrite it?

Shown when you try to update the server with an application of a different culture (you set the culture in the Publish Options Dialog Box).

The application platform does not match the existing application on the server. Do you want to overwrite it?

Shown when you try to update the server with an application of a different platform (you set the platform in the Advanced Compiler Settings Dialog Box (Visual Basic)).

The application is signed with a different key than the existing application on the server. Do you want to overwrite it?

Shown when you try to update the server with an application signed with a different key (that is, you picked a different key from the Signing page of the Project Designer; see Signing Page, Project Designer).
