Starting the Remote Tools Shell

This section describes the three ways to access the Remote Tools Shell.

To start the Remote Tools Shell from the Start menu

  • On the Start menu, type Microsoft Remote Tools Shell, and then press Enter.

To Start the Remote Tools Shell from Visual Studio

  • In Visual Studio, point to Tools > Remote Tools > Remote Tools Shell, and then press Enter.

To start the Remote Tools Shell from the Command Prompt window

  1. Open the Command Prompt window, and then type:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Remote Framework Tools\8.00\bin

  2. Press Enter, and then type:

    RemoteToolsShell

Disconnecting and Reconnecting to a Target Device

Use the following procedures to disconnect or reconnect a target device from a remote tool.

To Disconnect from a Target Device

  1. In the Remote Tools Shell, choose View > Remote Tools Shell Plug-in Explorer.

  2. In the Plug-in Explorer, in the main tool window on the left side, select a remote tool node under the name of the target device that you want to disconnect from the Remote Tools Shell.

  3. On the Connection menu, select Disconnect for the selected plug-in for the target device.

To Reconnect to a Target Device

  1. In the Remote Tools Shell, choose View > Remote Tools Shell Plug-in Explorer.

  2. In the Plug-in Explorer, in the main tool window on the left side, select a remote tool node under a currently disconnected device that you want to reconnect to the Remote Tools Shell.

  3. On the Connection menu, select Reconnect for the selected remote tool for the target device.

Use the Remote Tools Shell Plug-in Explorer as an easy way to keep track of the tools you’re using and the devices you’re using them with.

To view tool properties

  1. In the Remote Tools Shell, choose View > Remote Tools Shell Plug-in Explorer.

  2. In the Plug-in Explorer, in the main tool window on the left side, select the remote tool under the device that you want to look at.

    The Plug-in properties are displayed.
