The following topics describe some of the key features of Windows Embedded 8 Standard (Standard 8) and how to use them:
Branding features
- Custom Logon Overview
Suppress Windows 8 UI elements that relate to the Welcome screen and shutdown screen. For example, you can suppress all elements of the Welcome screen UI and provide a Custom Logon UI. You can also suppress the Blocked Shutdown Resolver (BSDR) screen and automatically end applications while the OS waits for applications to close before a shutdown.
- Unbranded Boot Overview
Suppress Windows 8 elements that appear when Standard 8 starts or resumes and can suppress the crash screen if Standard 8 encounters an error that it cannot recover from.
- Shell Launcher Overview
Replace the default Windows 8 shell with a custom shell. You can use any application or executable as your custom shell, such as a command window or a custom dedicated application.
- Windows 8 Application Launcher Overview
Start a Windows Store app immediately after a user signs in to an Standard 8 device and to restart the app when the app exits. You can configure Windows 8 Application Launcher to launch different apps for different users.
Lockdown features
- Write Filters Overview
Intercept all write attempts to a protected volume and redirect those write attempts to a virtual overlay. This improves the reliability and stability of your device and reduces the wear on write-sensitive media, such as flash memory media like solid-state drives. Write filters available in Standard 8 include Unified Write Filter (UWF), Enhanced Write Filter (EWF), and File-Based Write Filter (FBWF).
- Dialog Filter Overview
Control which dialog boxes and windows are displayed on the screen, and automatically handle dialog boxes by taking a default action, such as to close or show the dialog box.
- Keyboard Filter Overview
Suppress undesirable key presses or key combinations. Normally, a customer can use certain Windows key combinations like Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Ctrl+Shift+Tab to alter the operation of a device by locking the screen or using Task Manager to close a running application. This may not be desirable if your device is intended for a dedicated purpose.
- Gesture Filter Overview
Disable the edge and corner gestures available in Standard 8. Gesture Filter enables you to block edge gestures individually.
