Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded includes new Windows Vista features made available for Windows XP Pro. It also includes bug fixes and enhancements for Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007, which was released in November 2006.

Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded includes the following new features:

  • Internet Explorer 7
  • Windows Media Player 11
  • Remote Desktop Protocol 6.0
  • .NET Framework 3.0 Setup
  • User Mode Driver Framework
  • Enhancements to USB Boot 2.0
  • Enhancements to File-Based Write Filter

The following sections discuss the new features in detail.

Internet Explorer 7

Internet Explorer 7 includes the following new features and improvements over Internet Explorer 6:

  • Streamlined Interface—Maximizes web page screen area
  • Tabbed Browsing—Supports multiple Web sites, thumbnail images, and tab group
  • Improved Printing—Fits Web page content on printed page
  • RSS Feeds—Delivers the latest updates from favorite sites
  • Improved security—Protects against malicious software and protects personal data from fraudulent Web site and online phishing scams

Internet Explorer 7 is released as a componentized feature in Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded. Its componentized approach follows the same strategy as the re-factored version of Internet Explorer 6 released in Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007. As a result, when a full version of the Internet Explorer browser is not required, customers can build runtime images with optimized footprints by choosing only the necessary sub-components or primitives of Internet Explorer 7.

To accommodate the new features, Internet Explorer 7 adds the following new components and primitives in Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded:

  • Microsoft Feeds Manager
  • WinFX Run-time Components
  • InfoCard Component
  • Internationalized Domain Name Mitigations APIs
  • Primitive: ieframe.dll
  • Primitive: iertutil.dll

Internet Explorer 7 adds new user configuration settings for the Phishing Filter Option component in Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded.

Windows Media Player 11

Windows Media Player 11 (WMP) includes the following new features or improvements over the previous versions of Windows Media Player:

  • New visually driven experience using thumbnail and album art, an elegant and simple design, and customization capabilities for more personalized interaction.
  • Improved device experience with new shuffle sync and reverse sync options, device exploration using the library view, and intuitive Help icons that ensure seamless and intuitive syncing and burning of rights-managed content
  • Highly simplified navigation capabilities using new Instant Search, enhanced shortcut options, and dedicated category views for all media types, including music, photos and video
  • Better access to content with deep integration of services that blurs the line between online service and media player experiences
  • Industry-first audio fingerprinting capabilities that recognize and import track information for unidentified or misnamed audio files.

To support its more structured design and new features, the componentized version of WMP adds the following new components and primitives in Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded:

  • Windows Media Format Runtime 11
  • Microsoft Compression Engine

Remote Desktop Protocol 6.0

The Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Server Client) feature in Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded is updated with the new Remote Desktop Protocol 6.0 (RDP). RDP introduces the following improvements:

  • Network Level Authentication—Finishes user authentication before you establish a full Remote Desktop Connection and the logon screen appears.
  • Server authentication—Verifies that you are connecting to the correct remote computer or server. This security measure helps prevent you from connecting to a different computer or server than you intend. This also prevents you from unintentionally exposing confidential information.
  • Resource redirection—Helps you redirect Plug and Play devices that support redirection.
  • Terminal Services Gateway (TS Gateway) servers—Enables authorized users to connect to remote computers on a corporate network. These authorized users can connect from any computer by using an Internet connection. TS Gateway uses RDP together with the HTTPS protocol to help create a more secure, encrypted connection.
  • TS Remote Programs—Lets client computers connect to a remote computer and use programs that are installed on it. For example, a workplace may have a remote computer to which employees can connect and run Microsoft Word. An administrator must first publish the programs for end-users to access them. The experience is the same as running a program that is installed on the computer.
  • Monitor spanning—Supports high-resolution displays spanned across multiple monitors. However, the total resolution on all monitors must be under 4,096 x 2,048. The monitors must have the same resolution. Additionally, the monitors must be aligned side-by-side.
  • Visual improvements—Supports 32-bit color and font smoothing.

To support its more structured design and new features, the componentized version of RDP client adds the following new components and primitives in Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded:

  • Remote HTTP Client
  • Terminal Server Gateway Quarantine Enforcement Client
  • Terminal Server Client English-US MUI

.NET Framework 3.0 Setup

The new .NET Framework 3.0 Setup component in Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded lets customers install the .NET Framework 3.0 desktop distribution for XP Pro.

This new component also provides a user configuration setting to optionally install the .NET Framework 3.0 distribution package during the FBA process. Without using this option, the user may choose to install the .NET Framework 3.0 distribution package during the run-time operation of the target device.

.NET Framework 3.0 consists of new technologies including Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Workflow Foundation (WF), and Windows Card Space (WCS).

User Mode Driver Framework

Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded includes a componentized version of the new User Mode Driver Framework (UMDF) feature. UMDF enables developers to install and execute a device driver within the user mode level instead of the kernel mode level. UMDF architecture results in simpler installation procedure for the driver as well as making the system more secure and reliable. For example, an execution error occurring in the driver does cause the operating system to crash.

The UMDF feature released with Update Rollup 1.0 for Windows XP Embedded consists of the following components:

  • Windows User Mode Driver Framework

Enhancements to USB Boot 2.0

USB Boot 2.0 offers improved power management. USB Boot 2.0 now supports standby.

Enhancements to File-Based Write Filter

File-Based Write Filter (FBWF) offers an additional disk size reporting option. There are now two modes:

  1. Display actual disk size—Behaves like FBWF when it is disabled in Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007
  2. Display virtual disk size—Behaves like FBWF when it is enabled in Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Pack 2007

The default mode is Display actual disk size.
