If you set your AdControl size properties to less than the standard values or to Auto, you might receive no ads.

Ad Sizes for XAML Apps

This information only applies to apps written in XAML. It does not apply to apps written in Silverlight because Silverlight controls handle scaling differently.

The amount of pixels the AdControl takes up on the screen of a device will vary slightly depending on the device resolution and the number of viewable pixels provided by the manufacturer of the phone. This is true for all XAML based apps running on the Windows Phone 8.1 and greater operating system. For more information about this see the topic Guidelines for scaling to pixel density.

The default size for the AdControl in a XAML app is 320 x 50. This is the recommended size to use in a Windows Phone XAML application.

For apps targeting phones in portrait orientation, choose the 320x50 ad size in Microsoft pubCenter. Depending on the device resolution and the amount of pixels the phone manufacturer allows an app to use, the 320x50 ad size on a screen in portrait mode will take up the most of the width of the screen.

Depending on the phone, its resolution, and the number of viewable pixels provided by the manufacturer of the phone, you can use the advertising industry standard 320x50 ad size or the non-standard 480x80 ad size. It is recommended you use the 320x50 ad size for all phone apps. This size ad will fit both smaller and larger screens.

If you request the 480x80 ad size but the screen size cannot accommodate displaying that many pixels, no ad will be displayed or the displayed ad may overflow the screen (for example, if the ad size fits in the ad control, but the ad control doesn’t fit inside the available screen size).

The AdControl must be the same size or larger than the requested ad size.

Summary:

  • This guidance applies to new XAML apps.

  • In pubCenter, choose the 320x50 ad size for your ads.

  • The 320x50 ad size will display on smaller screens.

  • For more information about displays and pixel density in Windows Phone 8.1 apps written using XAML see the topic Guidelines for scaling to pixel density.

For Text Ads: Text ads will be rendered so that they fill the AdControl. The ad unit’s size in Microsoft pubCenter has no effect on the rendering of text ads.

Ad Sizes for Silverlight Apps

The default size for an AdControl in a Silverlight app is 480 x 80. This is the recommended size to use in a Windows Phone Silverlight application.

Even if the ad units were created using a format size of 300 x 50 or 320 x 50 in Microsoft pubCenter, set your AdControl size to 480 x 80 for a better user experience.

For Text Ads: Text ads will be rendered so that they fill the AdControl. The ad unit’s size in Microsoft pubCenter has no effect on the rendering of text ads.
