Windows Side-By-Side Assemblies
The Windows Side-By-Side Assemblies component supports the installation of multiple versions of the same assembly, and their use simultaneously. Components constituting these assemblies are self-described, isolated, self-contained, and must be authored so that they do not conflict with each other. Applications specify the version of the assembly the application should use.

This component interacts with the operating system (OS) to create activation contexts that describe dependencies on assemblies. The Windows Side-By-Side Assemblies component is used by the application loader, the Win32 run time, and Component Object Model (COM) so that applications can use both shared and private side-by-side assemblies.
