Check Out Dialog Box (Explorer)

Checks out the latest version of the selected file or project from the Visual SourceSafe database and places a writable copy in your working folder.

Dialog Box Access

In Visual SourceSafe Explorer, on the Versions menu, click Check Out.

Note

You can specify whether the Check Out dialog box is displayed by using the Command Dialogs tab in the SourceSafe Options dialog box.

  • Advanced
    Displays advanced options Replace writable, Set file time, and Allow multiple checkouts.
  • Allow multiple checkouts
    Advanced option. Allows multiple users to check out the file or project at the same time.
  • Browse
    Allows you to navigate to the folder to set as the working folder.
  • Build tree -- override working folders
    Projects only. Overrides the working folders set for the subprojects in a recursive operation and builds a project tree on your local computer that mirrors the database project organization. This option is available only when you select the Recursive check box.
  • Check out working folder version
    Checks out only local copies of items. This setting overrides the database-level setting on the General tab of the SourceSafe Options dialog box.
  • Comment
    Specifies an optional comment about the checkout. A comment can contain up to 63 characters. While the file is checked out, this comment can be viewed on the Check Out Status tab.
  • Don't get local copy
    Specifies that the check out operation should not retrieve local copies of the items.
  • Only show this dialog when the Shift key is down
    Specifies that this dialog box is not displayed unless you hold down the SHIFT key when you select the Check Out command.
  • Recursive
    Projects only. Checks out the project and all its subprojects. Selection of this check box displays a build tree.
  • Replace writable
    Advanced option. Specifies the effect of a checkout operation on items marked as writable in the working folder. Possible options are:

    Option Description

    Default

    Uses the Visual SourceSafe default, which is Ask.

    Ask

    Prompts for each file that corresponds to a writable file on your local disk.

    Replace

    Replaces local writable files with those checked out from the database.

    Skip

    Does not check out database files corresponding to local writable files.

    Merge

    Automatically attempts to merge the local and database file versions.

  • Set file time
    Advanced option. Associates a time with the checkout. Possible options are:

    Default

    Uses the default setting for the database. This setting is made on the Local Files tab of the SourceSafe Options dialog box.

    Current

    Specifies the current date and time.

    Modification

    Specifies the date and time when the item was last saved.

    Check In

    Specifies the date and time of check-in.

  • To
    Specifies the working folder to which the item is checked out. By default, the item is checked out to the working folder that you have specified, and has the same name as in the database. However, you can enter a different folder, or use the Browse button to locate one.
