Create a Transform or Map in BizTalk Services

Updated: November 21, 2013

Using the Transform Designer, you can define relationships between an input XML document and an output XML document using links and Map Operations. Transforms are created using Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML).

A Transform project (BizTalk Service Artifacts) is part of the BizTalk Services SDK template in Visual Studio. The BizTalk Services template is created when the Microsoft Azure BizTalk Services SDK is installed. For specific installation steps, see Install Azure BizTalk Services SDK.

There are two ways to create a new Transform: Add a map to the BizTalk Service project or create a new BizTalk Service Artifacts project.

This topic lists the following steps:

Create a BizTalk Service Artifacts project

Add a Transform to the BizTalk Services project

Using the Schema Editor

Create a BizTalk Service Artifacts project

When you create a BizTalk Service Artifacts project, you are creating a Transform (TransformName.trfm) independent of any other project. When the Transform is created, it can be added to an X12 Agreement and added to the BizTalk Service project.

To create a Transform:

  1. Open Visual Studio.

  2. Click New Project.

  3. Expand the Visual C# template and click BizTalk Services.

  4. Click BizTalk Service Artifacts.

  5. Enter the desired Name, Location, and Solution name properties.

  6. Click OK.

When the project is opened, Map.trfm, Schema1.xsd, and Schema2.xsd are created automatically. BizTalk Services Transforms have a .trfm extension. Opening a .trfm file displays the Transform Design surface. In the design surface, you can add schemas and Map Operations, as described in the next sections.

Add a Transform to the BizTalk Services project

When a Transform is added or created in the BizTalk Service project, the Transform can be used in the XML One-Way Bridge or the XML Request-Reply Bridge. Specifically, the Transform can be used in the Transform Stage of the XML bridge to manipulate the message:

XML Bridge : Configure the Transform Stage for the Request Message

DELETE: XML Request-Reply Bridge : Configuring the Transform Stage for the Request Message

XML Request-Reply Bridge : Configuring the Transform Stage for the Response Message

Uses and Stages of Bridges provides more information on the Transform Stage.

Add a new Transform to the BizTalk Service project

  1. Open Visual Studio and open your BizTalk Service project.

  2. In the BizTalk Services project, go to Solution Explorer.

  3. Right-click the project, click Add, and click New Item.

  4. Click Map, enter a name, and click Add.

Add an existing Transform to the BizTalk Service project

  1. Open Visual Studio and open your BizTalk Service project.

  2. In Solution Explorer, right-click the project, click Add, and then click Existing Item.

  3. Browse to the location of the Transform file (TransformName.trfm) and click Add.

Using the Schema Editor

BizTalk Services provides the ability to create and modify schemas. To use the Schema Editor:

  1. Open a BizTalk Services or BizTalk Service Artifacts project in Visual Studio.

  2. Add an existing schema (.xsd) or add a new schema (.xsd) to the project using the following steps:

    1. Right-click the project and click Add.

    2. Click Existing Item to add a schema that is already created. To create a new schema, click New Item and then click Schema.

  3. Click Add.

  4. Double-click the schema (.xsd) to open the Schema Editor.

At this point, records, attributes, elements and groups can be added. Developing EDI Schemas provides information on creating and modifying existing schemas.
