Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview)

Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview) introduces a new way for you to perform caching that helps you build fast, scalable applications in Windows Azure through a secure, dedicated cache created for you in Windows Azure. A secure, dedicated cache is created for you in the Windows Azure region of your choice and you have total control over the cache, guaranteeing isolation of your business critical data.

For a step-by-step walkthrough, see How to use Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview). For downloadable examples, see Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview) Samples.

What's New in Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview)

Cache Service (Preview) is a major improvement over the (now deprecated) Shared Caching service and also has many advantages over In-Role Cache. If you are on either of those, or are trying to choose one Cache offering, you should switch over to Cache Service (Preview) today!

What's New Description

Support across Azure

Cache Service (Preview) introduces the ability to access the cache from anywhere. This lets you leverage the power of Cache from Windows Azure Web Sites, Windows Azure Cloud Services, and Windows Azure Virtual Machines.

For more information about configuring Cache Service (Preview) with different types of cache clients, see How to: Configure a Cache Client for Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview).

Share data across applications

Use Cache to share data across loosely coupled applications running across different Windows Azure services or across multiple instances of the same application in Windows Azure.

Easy Manageability

Cache Service (Preview) provides manageability through the new Windows Azure Management Portal. You can easily create a cache, scale a cache, configure a cache, and monitor the health and performance of a cache.

No quotas or throttling

Now, there are no predefined quotas on bandwidth and connections. Physical capacity is the only limiting factor and you only pay based upon the cache size. You can now focus solely on your application and its data needs.

Isolation, flexibility, and control

Cache Service (Preview) offers a dedicated cache providing isolation of your business critical data.

Memcache compatibility

Seamlessly migrate applications that use Memcache to Cache Service (Preview) with no code changes. For more information, see Run your Memcache app with Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview).

Easy migration

Easily migrate your applications running In-Role Cache (either Dedicated/Co-located) to Cache Service (Preview).

More Reasons to choose Cache Service (Preview)

Cache Service (Preview) Benefit Description

High Performance

Cache Service (Preview) helps your application become more responsive even as user load increases. The separate distributed cache layer allows your data tier to scale independently for more efficient use of compute resources in your application layer. No transaction limits means you only need to focus on your application, not scaling.

Great Features

Cache Service (Preview) provides greater control and complete isolation of your cache. It also provides custom configurable options including creating up to 10 named caches for Standard and Premium caches with different expiration and eviction policies. You can also easily monitor the health and performance of your cache through the Windows Azure portal. Moreover, you can optionally configure high availability on individual caches for added resiliency for your cached data. For more information, see Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview) Features.

Easy to Use

Windows Azure SDK Cache API makes it easy to add cache to ASP.NET applications for Cache Service (Preview). Deploying Azure SDK 2.1 allows you to easily migrate between In-Role Cache and Cache Service (Preview). You can also easily migrate applications using on-premises AppFabric Cache or Windows Azure Shared Caching to the new Cache Service (Preview). Or you can configure existing applications that use Memcache to Windows Azure Cache with no code changes. For more information, see Migrate to Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview).

Cache Offerings

Cache Service (Preview) is available in the following three offerings.

  • Basic - Cache in sizes from 128MB to 1GB in 128MB increments, with one default named cache

  • Standard - Cache in sizes from 1GB to 10GB in 1GB increments, with support for notifications and up to ten named caches

  • Premium - Cache in sizes from 5GB to 150GB in 5GB increments, with support for notifications, high availability, and up to ten named caches

These cache offerings give you the flexibility to configure the cache you need for your application. For more information, see Cache Offerings for Windows Azure Cache Service (Preview).
